The cost of living in Canggu for digital nomads is about $1,975 a month in 2026 for a single remote worker with a private place, a scooter, cafes and a coworking day pass now and then. That is roughly 43% more than Denpasar ($1,385), 79% more than Chiang Mai ($1,106) and 86% more than Da Nang ($1,064). Canggu is the most expensive and the least connected of those five places, so the real question is whether the surf, the community and the weather are worth about $10,000 extra per year.
This guide breaks the monthly budget into lean, comfortable and premium tiers, explains what to expect from rent, food, scooters and internet, walks through the wet and dry seasons month by month, and compares Canggu with Ubud, Denpasar, Chiang Mai and Da Nang. Every figure comes from our own city data. Where we do not have a number for Canggu itself, we say so instead of guessing.
How much does it cost to live in Canggu in 2026?
Our data gives four monthly lifestyle figures for Canggu. These are monthly totals, not line items. The nomad figure of $1,975 assumes one person working remotely, renting a furnished place and eating out regularly. The expat figure is $2,045, the local-lifestyle figure is $1,656, and a family of four lands at $5,795.
Two things stand out. First, the gap between the local figure ($1,656) and the nomad figure ($1,975) is only $319, which tells you that Canggu is priced for visitors across the board: even a local-style budget here is expensive by Indonesian standards. Second, the expat figure sits just $70 above the nomad figure, so staying longer and renting on a 6-12 month contract does not change the picture much in this part of Bali. The family figure is 2.9 times the nomad figure, driven by housing and schooling.
| Profile | Monthly cost in Canggu (USD) |
|---|---|
| Local lifestyle | $1,656 |
| Digital nomad (single) | $1,975 |
| Expat (single) | $2,045 |
| Family of four | $5,795 |
Canggu is a small place. Our data lists its population at about 30,000, which explains why the whole economy bends around visitors: villas, cafes, gyms, surf schools and coworking spaces rather than offices and supermarkets with local pricing.
What does a monthly budget look like: lean, comfortable and premium?
We do not have individual item prices for Canggu, so the three tiers below are anchored on the lifestyle figures in our data rather than on a shopping list. The lean tier uses the Canggu local-lifestyle figure ($1,656), the comfortable tier is the Canggu nomad figure, and the premium tier starts at the Canggu expat figure.
| Tier | Monthly budget | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Lean | $1,656 | Local-style spending: a modest room or small guesthouse, warung meals most days, a rented scooter, a shared coworking desk or home internet. In Canggu this usually means living a few kilometres back from the beach. |
| Comfortable | $1,975 | A private furnished studio or one-bedroom villa share, a mix of warung and cafe meals, scooter rental, a coworking membership for part of the month, a gym or yoga class and a weekend on the water. |
| Premium | $2,045 and up | A private villa with a pool, daily cafe and restaurant meals, a coworking desk every day, regular massages and trips around the island. Costs scale quickly once you add a car and driver or a beachfront setting. |
Notice how narrow the band is. Between the lean and comfortable tiers you gain $319 a month, and from comfortable to premium the baseline moves only $70. In practice the premium tier is open-ended: our data shows the average expat spends $2,045, yet a villa with a private pool and a daily restaurant habit can push well beyond that. Plan on the comfortable figure, and treat the premium figure as the floor of that style rather than a ceiling. For scale, Denpasar, the cheaper neighbouring city, has a nomad figure of $1,385.
How much is rent in Canggu?
Our data does not carry a rent figure for Canggu, so we cannot quote one without inventing it. What we can say is that housing is the biggest swing factor in the $1,975 nomad figure, and that the nearest priced reference on the island is Denpasar. There, a one-bedroom apartment in the centre costs $207 a month and $176 outside the centre. A three-bedroom is $497 in the centre and $350 outside.
Canggu does not rent at Denpasar prices. Denpasar is a working city of about 789,000 people; Canggu is a beach strip where owners price for holidaymakers. The 43% gap between the Canggu and Denpasar nomad figures is largely a housing gap. When you search, expect three kinds of place: a room in a guesthouse (cheapest, often monthly with cleaning included), a furnished studio or one-bedroom in a small complex, and a private villa, usually shared between two or three people to make the maths work.
Which Canggu area suits you?
Batu Bolong and the streets around it are the busiest, with the most cafes, coworking spaces and nightlife, and also the most noise and traffic. Berawa is calmer, with newer villas and gyms. Pererenan, a little further north, is quieter and slightly less crowded, but you need a scooter for everything. Check any listing against three questions: does it have a stable fibre line, is it on a road that floods in heavy rain, and how far is it from the places you will visit daily.
Utilities and the small bills
Denpasar utilities for an 85 m2 flat run $49 a month and a 60 Mbps home internet plan costs $30. Expect villas with a pool, air conditioning running all night and a gardener or cleaner to land above that. Many monthly rents include some or all of these costs, so ask what is included before comparing prices.
How much does food cost: warung versus cafe?
Food is where Canggu splits into two worlds. A local warung (a small family restaurant) serves rice, noodles, grilled chicken and vegetables at prices close to the rest of Bali, while the cafe strip around Batu Bolong charges tourist prices for smoothie bowls, flat whites and brunch. The Denpasar figures show the local end of the spectrum.
| Item | Denpasar price (USD) |
|---|---|
| Meal at an inexpensive restaurant | $2.90 |
| Meal at a mid-range restaurant | $25.93 |
| Cappuccino | $2.04 |
| Domestic beer in a restaurant | $2.27 |
| Imported beer in a restaurant | $2.59 |
| Mid-range bottle of wine | $19.45 |
| Milk, 1 litre | $1.23 |
| Eggs, 12 | $1.29 |
| Rice, 1 kg | $0.80 |
| Chicken fillets, 1 kg | $3.17 |
| Monthly gym membership | $25.93 |
Treat these as the floor. Someone eating only at warungs can keep food under $200 a month on island prices: 60 meals at $2.90 is $174. A nomad who has breakfast and lunch in cafes, dinner in a mid-range restaurant three times a week and drinks with friends will spend several times that, which is why the nomad figure ($1,975) sits so far above the local one. Wine and imported alcohol are the quiet budget killers, since Bali taxes them heavily and the real Canggu price is well above the Denpasar $19.45.
The practical rule is simple: eat one meal a day at a warung, cook a little, and treat cafe visits as your office rent. Our data lists a Denpasar cappuccino at $2.04, but the same coffee in a Canggu cafe, where you also pay for the desk, the aircon and the wifi, costs more.
How much does a scooter cost, and how do you get around?
You need one. Canggu is spread along narrow roads with no useful public transport, so nearly every resident rents a scooter by the month. Our Denpasar reference puts petrol at $0.77 per litre, a taxi start at $0.65 and a taxi at $0.47 per kilometre. A one-way local transport ticket is $0.21 and a monthly pass $12.96, but those apply to the city, not to the beach strip. We do not have a monthly scooter rental price for Canggu in our data, so check current rates locally.
Petrol is a small line next to the rental itself, so compare operators on insurance and helmet quality, not just the monthly price. Traffic is the other cost: our commute index for Canggu is 22.4, a little better than Denpasar (25.5) and Chiang Mai (26.2), but the narrow roads jam badly around sunset and on weekends. Ride-hailing apps and taxis work for airport runs and rainy nights, though drivers in the tourist zone often quote above the meter.
If you plan to ride, check the official rules for driving licences and insurance for your nationality before you arrive. Tourists are often stopped at police checks, and a scooter accident without the right licence can invalidate a travel insurance claim.
Is the internet in Canggu good enough for remote work?
This is the honest weak spot. Our data shows an average internet speed of 32 Mbps for Canggu, the same figure as the rest of Indonesia. For comparison, Chiang Mai averages 238 Mbps and Da Nang 164 Mbps, which is 7.4 and 5.1 times faster. Video calls, cloud storage and a normal workday run fine at 32 Mbps, but large uploads, several people sharing one line and unstable power days are where Canggu hurts.
| City | Average internet speed | Compared with Canggu |
|---|---|---|
| Canggu | 32 Mbps | - |
| Ubud | 32 Mbps | Same |
| Denpasar | 32 Mbps | Same |
| Da Nang | 164 Mbps | 5.1 times faster |
| Chiang Mai | 238 Mbps | 7.4 times faster |
Practical advice: choose accommodation with a dedicated fibre line and ask for a speed test before you pay a deposit. Keep a prepaid mobile data plan as a backup (prepaid mobile minutes cost $0.09 in Denpasar), and work from a coworking space for important calls and deadlines. Coworking spaces in Canggu have invested in redundant lines and generators precisely because home wifi varies, and a day pass or monthly desk is a sensible part of the comfortable tier.
Power outages and storms occasionally cut a line, and the dry season brings few interruptions. Indonesia uses type C and F plugs at 230 V, so most European and Asian laptop chargers work as they are.
What is the weather like in Canggu, month by month?
Canggu has two seasons rather than four. Our monthly records show temperatures that barely move, from a daily mean of 25.4 degrees C in August to 28.0 degrees C in January, so the real variable is rain. The table averages the daily figures for each month.
| Month | Mean temp | Daily high | Daily low | Rain per day | Sunshine hours per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 28°C | 32°C | 25°C | 2.8 mm | 10.4 |
| February | 27°C | 31°C | 25°C | 8.0 mm | 11.0 |
| March | 28°C | 31°C | 25°C | 6.1 mm | 10.9 |
| April | 27°C | 30°C | 25°C | 5.9 mm | 10.0 |
| May | 27°C | 29°C | 25°C | 2.4 mm | 10.8 |
| June | 26°C | 29°C | 24°C | 1.8 mm | 10.8 |
| July | 26°C | 28°C | 23°C | 0.9 mm | 10.9 |
| August | 25°C | 29°C | 23°C | 0.7 mm | 11.0 |
| September | 26°C | 30°C | 24°C | 1.4 mm | 11.1 |
| October | 27°C | 31°C | 24°C | 1.3 mm | 10.9 |
| November | 28°C | 31°C | 25°C | 4.4 mm | 11.7 |
| December | 27°C | 29°C | 25°C | 11.4 mm | 7.9 |
The wettest month in our data is December, with 11.4 mm of rain per day on average and just 7.9 hours of sun. February and March follow. The driest stretch runs from June to October, with July and August below 1 mm per day. Humidity sits around 81%, so even dry months feel warm and sticky, and air quality scores 4 on our scale, with an air quality value of 50.
One caution: these records come from a short window of observations, so individual months can look better or worse than the typical year. Local advice puts the wet season between November and March, with the heaviest rain and flooded roads at its peak. The dry season, April to October, is also high tourist season, especially July and August, when rents and traffic peak together. For the best balance of weather and prices, many remote workers aim for May, June or September.
How safe is Canggu, and what about healthcare?
Our quality indices put Canggu at 50.1 for safety and 57.8 for healthcare. Those are the lowest in the comparison group, below Denpasar (71.2 and 65.0), Chiang Mai (77.6 and 85.0) and Da Nang (75.9 and 83.5). The pollution index is 79.0, the highest of the group (higher is worse), and the purchasing power index is just 17.3.
| Index (our data) | Canggu | Denpasar | Chiang Mai | Da Nang |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safety | 50.1 | 71.2 | 77.6 | 75.9 |
| Healthcare | 57.8 | 65.0 | 85.0 | 83.5 |
| Pollution (higher is worse) | 79.0 | 69.7 | 77.8 | 53.0 |
| Climate | 64.3 | 64.3 | 75.9 | 70.8 |
| Purchasing power | 17.3 | 42.3 | 67.4 | 55.4 |
| Cost of living index | 35.4 | 24.7 | 30.0 | 25.8 |
| Commute time | 22.4 | 25.5 | 26.2 | 27.4 |
What does a safety index of 50 mean on the ground? Violent crime is rare. The realistic risks are scooter accidents, bag snatching from moving bikes, theft from unlocked villas and scams around money changers. Lock your valuables, use a secure bag on the scooter, and choose accommodation with a safe. Road accidents are the single biggest danger to visitors, so wear a proper helmet every time.
Healthcare is the larger gap. Canggu has clinics and private hospitals within a short ride, and Denpasar has the island main hospitals, but quality varies and serious cases are often evacuated. Proper travel health insurance with evacuation cover is not optional. Add the usual basics: drink bottled or filtered water, be careful with ice and raw produce to avoid stomach trouble, and ask a doctor or official travel health service about vaccinations before you go.
How does Canggu compare with Ubud, Denpasar, Chiang Mai and Da Nang?
The comparison below uses the same lifestyle figures for every city. Canggu and Ubud are almost identical in price, and both sit far above the two mainland Southeast Asian cities.
| City | Nomad (monthly) | Expat | Local | Family | Internet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canggu | $1,975 | $2,045 | $1,656 | $5,795 | 32 Mbps |
| Ubud | $1,959 | $1,874 | $1,300 | $4,552 | 32 Mbps |
| Denpasar | $1,385 | $990 | $333 | $1,166 | 32 Mbps |
| Chiang Mai | $1,106 | $724 | $459 | $1,607 | 238 Mbps |
| Da Nang | $1,064 | $820 | $517 | $1,810 | 164 Mbps |
Canggu versus Ubud
The nomad figures differ by $16 ($1,975 against $1,959), so cost will not decide this one. Ubud has the highest humidity in the group at 90% and a smaller population of about 80,000, set among rice fields rather than surf breaks. Pick Canggu for the beach, gyms and nightlife, and Ubud for quiet, yoga and cooler evenings.
Canggu versus Denpasar
Denpasar is $590 a month cheaper on the nomad figure and scores better on safety (71.2 against 50.1) and purchasing power. It is the island capital rather than a destination, so you give up the cafe and coworking scene. Some people live in Denpasar and commute to Canggu for the social side, which works only if you tolerate the traffic.
Canggu versus Chiang Mai and Da Nang
This is the real trade-off. Chiang Mai costs $869 a month less ($10,428 a year) and Da Nang $911 less ($10,932 a year), while offering internet that is 5 to 7 times faster, safety indices around 76 to 78 and healthcare indices above 83. Da Nang adds a beach and Chiang Mai a mature nomad infrastructure. What Canggu offers in return is a surf-and-wellness lifestyle, year-round warmth and a very large English-speaking community.
Who is Canggu for, and who should skip it?
Canggu suits remote workers who value lifestyle over savings: surfers, yoga and fitness regulars, people who want a social scene without effort, and anyone whose work runs well on a 32 Mbps connection with a coworking backup. It is also a good fit for a 1 to 3 month stay, long enough to settle in but short enough that the high costs do not compound.
Skip Canggu if you depend on fast and stable internet for uploads, streaming or live broadcasts, if you want to keep expenses under about $1,500 a month, if you dislike heavy scooter traffic, or if you travel with children and need nearby hospitals and schools. Light sleepers should also avoid the streets around Batu Bolong. Before you commit, check the official source for the current visa rules, permitted stay and any rules on remote work in Indonesia, because these change and our data does not cover them.
What is the verdict on the cost of living in Canggu for digital nomads in 2026?
Plan on $1,975 a month for a comfortable remote-work life in Canggu, with a leaner floor near $1,656 if you live away from the beach strip and a premium style from $2,045 upward. You pay roughly $870 to $910 a month more than in Chiang Mai or Da Nang and get slower internet, lower safety and healthcare scores and heavier traffic. In return you get constant warmth (25 to 28 degrees C on average every month), a ready-made community and a beach lifestyle that the mainland cities cannot copy.
If your work is flexible and you value that lifestyle, Canggu is worth a season. If you want the most output per dollar, Chiang Mai and Da Nang win by a wide margin. A good compromise is to base yourself in Canggu during the dry season from May to September, and spend the rest of the year somewhere cheaper with faster internet.
