December is the month when Asia sorts itself out for remote workers. The monsoon has left most of South and Southeast Asia, the heat of the spring has not yet arrived, and the cities of the mainland tropics are dry and comfortable. Further north the picture changes: Hong Kong and Hanoi turn properly cool, and a light jacket stops being optional. This guide ranks the ten best Asian cities for a digital nomad in December using our own monthly score, and for each one it sets cost, internet, safety and December weather next to how that city's December compares with its own best month of the year.
An existing article covers the best destinations for December across the whole world. This one is deliberately narrower. It looks only at Asia, so every city below is one you can reach on a short regional flight from the others, and the comparison is about trade-offs inside the region: Thai convenience against Cambodian prices, Vietnamese food against Hong Kong infrastructure, Indian cities that are finally dry against Southeast Asian ones that are at their best.
How we ranked the cities
Our monthly score is a single number that combines the weather for a given month with the rest of what we track for each city. Higher is better. For this ranking we took every Asian city that has both a nomad cost figure and a city internet speed in our database, looked up its score for December, and sorted from the top. The ten cities below are the first ten of that list. Kaohsiung in Taiwan came eleventh with 450, one point behind Vientiane, so it is worth a look if the cooler end of this list appeals to you.
Two cautions. First, the scores in the middle of the table are very close. Nine cities sit within 19 points of each other, between 470 and 451, so the order of places two to ten should be read as a grouping rather than a strict verdict. Second, we only quote what the data supports. Rainfall figures in our weather records are unreliable for many Asian cities, so we describe December through temperature and leave rainfall out. Safety is shown as an index where higher means safer, and we treat it as a rough guide, not a ruling.
The top 10 at a glance
| Rank | City | Dec score | Nomad cost (USD/month) | Internet (Mbps) | Safety index | Dec avg temp (C) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chiang Mai, Thailand | 488 | 1,106 | 238 | 77.6 | 22.8 |
| 2 | Bangkok, Thailand | 470 | 1,490 | 272 | 61.0 | 27.9 |
| 3 | Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam | 470 | 1,050 | 174 | 48.8 | 26.1 |
| 4 | Phnom Penh, Cambodia | 461 | 1,169 | 50 | 48.0 | 26.7 |
| 5 | Siem Reap, Cambodia | 460 | 1,212 | 47 | 67.5 | 25.3 |
| 6 | Pattaya, Thailand | 457 | 1,503 | 238 | 53.9 | 26.8 |
| 7 | Mumbai, India | 456 | 1,536 | 58 | 55.8 | 25.5 |
| 8 | Hong Kong | 453 | 2,870 | 70 | 78.6 | 17.1 |
| 9 | Hanoi, Vietnam | 452 | 1,078 | 163 | 65.9 | 17.5 |
| 10 | Vientiane, Laos | 451 | 989 | 41 | 65.2 | 21.5 |
Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City tie on 470; we list Bangkok first because it is the larger market, but nothing in the data separates them. The pattern is clear from the table alone: Thailand supplies three of the ten places, Cambodia two, Vietnam two, and India, Hong Kong and Laos one each. Chiang Mai is the only city that leads on score and is also among the cheaper options.
1. Chiang Mai: the highest score in Asia in December
Chiang Mai scores 488 in December, the best of any Asian city we rank, and it does so while costing $1,106 a month for a nomad. City internet averages 238 Mbps, which is more than enough for video calls and large uploads. The safety index is 77.6, the second highest in this top ten after Hong Kong.
The December weather explains the score. The average temperature is 22.8 C, with an average daytime high of 28.3 C and an average night low of 18.3 C. That is a day you can work on a terrace and a night where you will want a thin layer. For a city that reaches an average of 31.7 C in April and sits at its weakest score of 247 in August, December is plainly a favourable month.
Against its own calendar, Chiang Mai in December is not just good, it is the joint best. The score is 488 in November, December, January and February alike, and no month beats it. If you can only commit to a few weeks, any of those four months gives you the same result, and December has the advantage of falling just before the busiest stretch of the new year.
2. Bangkok: the fastest internet on the list
Bangkok scores 470 and has the fastest city internet of the ten at 272 Mbps. The nomad budget is $1,490 a month, higher than Chiang Mai by about $384, and you pay it for scale: more coworking choice, more flights, better medical access and a food scene that runs all night. A one-bedroom apartment in the centre costs about $595 a month and an inexpensive restaurant meal about $2.74, so the premium is mostly in housing.
December in Bangkok averages 27.9 C, with highs of 33.0 C and lows of 23.0 C. It is warm rather than cool, but it is a long way from the 31.8 C average of April. Our score for Bangkok in December equals its January score of 470 and is the highest of the year. The low point is July at 326. If you want to be in Bangkok at its easiest, December and January are the answer.
The safety index is 61.0. That is a moderate figure, and as in any big city the practical advice is ordinary: use licensed transport, keep your phone out of sight on motorbike-heavy roads and choose a neighbourhood with a short walk to the metro.
3. Ho Chi Minh City: its single best month
Ho Chi Minh City ties Bangkok on 470 and is the cheaper of the two at $1,050 a month, the lowest nomad cost among the top three. Internet averages 174 Mbps. A one-bedroom apartment in the centre is about $494 a month, a 60 Mbps home internet plan about $11.48, and an inexpensive meal about $2.04.
December is not just a good month for Ho Chi Minh City; it is the best one. The score of 470 compares with 455 in January, 451 in November and a low of 280 in September. In other words, a December arrival gets you the city at its very top, and the difference between December and the worst month is 190 points. The average temperature is 26.1 C, with highs of 30.1 C and lows of 23.3 C.
The safety index of 48.8 is the lowest in the top ten, joined closely by Phnom Penh at 48.0. We would not build an argument on a single index, but it is a reminder to take bag-snatching and phone theft seriously in a busy district and to choose accommodation with a sensible entrance and a secure lock.
4 and 5. Phnom Penh and Siem Reap: cheap, and best in December
Cambodia places two cities in the top five. Phnom Penh scores 461 for $1,169 a month, and Siem Reap scores 460 for $1,212. Both are a long way below Thailand on internet speed, at 50 and 47 Mbps, which is workable for calls and ordinary work but not for heavy file transfers. If your work depends on a fast connection, check the specific building before you commit.
Both cities are at their best in the window around December. Each scores exactly the same in December and January, 461 and 460 respectively, and these are the highest scores of their year. The weakest months are October for Phnom Penh at 281 and September for Siem Reap at 288. The average December temperature is 26.7 C in Phnom Penh and 25.3 C in Siem Reap, with Siem Reap's night low falling to 21.0 C.
Siem Reap is the cheaper place to rent. A one-bedroom apartment in the centre is about $238 a month, against $547 in Phnom Penh. Its safety index is 67.5, well ahead of Phnom Penh at 48.0. A 60 Mbps home internet plan costs about $35.25 in both. For a nomad who wants a smaller, calmer base for a month or two, Siem Reap in December is a strong choice; for someone who needs a capital city with more services, Phnom Penh is the one.
6. Pattaya: a December peak close to Bangkok
Pattaya scores 457, its highest of the year, and it costs $1,503 a month with internet at 238 Mbps. The average December temperature is 26.8 C, with highs of 31.2 C and lows of 23.0 C. Its weakest scores are 355, in May and July, so the swing across the year is smaller than in many cities on this list, which makes it forgiving if your dates slip.
Its place on the list is as a coastal alternative within easy reach of Bangkok. It suits someone who wants a flat near the sea and a regular rhythm, and who can accept a safety index of 53.9. It does not have Chiang Mai's low price or Bangkok's choice of coworking, but in December it is one of the more reliable Thai options.
7. Mumbai: dry, and finally good
Mumbai scores 456 in December, and the reason is the calendar. Its monsoon months are the problem: the score falls to 92 in July and 138 in June. By December the rain has gone and the average temperature is 25.5 C, with highs of 31.5 C and lows of 21.3 C. The December score equals the January score of 456, which is the best of the year for the city.
It costs $1,536 a month, the second highest of the ten after Hong Kong, and internet averages 58 Mbps. A one-bedroom apartment in the centre is about $522 a month, a 60 Mbps home plan about $9.33 and an inexpensive meal about $3.68. The safety index is 55.8. For anyone who wants an Indian base, December through February is the sensible window; the same city in July is a different proposition.
8 and 9. Hong Kong and Hanoi: the cool end, and the only two below their best
These are the two cities in the top ten where December is not the peak. Hong Kong scores 453 against its best month of October at 473, a gap of 20 points. Hanoi scores 452 against November at 472, also a gap of 20. In both cases the reason is temperature: Hong Kong averages 17.1 C in December, with highs of 20.6 C and lows of 12.7 C, and Hanoi averages 17.5 C, with highs of 22.1 C and lows of 13.5 C. They are the coolest cities in the top ten by a clear margin.
That does not make them poor choices. Hong Kong has the highest safety index of the ten at 78.6 and city internet of 70 Mbps, but it is by far the most expensive at $2,870 a month, and a one-bedroom flat in the centre averages about $2,295. Hanoi is the opposite on price: $1,078 a month, internet of 163 Mbps, a one-bedroom flat in the centre at about $330, a 60 Mbps home plan at about $9.66 and an inexpensive meal at about $2.04, with a safety index of 65.9. Hanoi in December is cool, sometimes grey and very good value; it is also one of the cheapest places on the list to live well.
If you would rather be a month earlier in either city, both peak in the autumn, October for Hong Kong and November for Hanoi. If your dates are fixed on December, bring warm layers and enjoy the lower cost of heating-free apartments that stay mild.
10. Vientiane: the cheapest, and the quietest
Vientiane closes the list with 451 and has the lowest nomad cost at $989 a month. Internet is the weakest of the ten at 41 Mbps. December averages 21.5 C, with highs of 26.8 C and lows of 16.9 C, so evenings are cool. The score of 451 is the same in November, December, January and February, which means the city is at its best for four months in a row.
A one-bedroom apartment in the centre costs about $510 a month and an inexpensive meal about $3.00. The safety index is 65.2. Vientiane is a good fit for someone with light bandwidth needs and a wish for quiet and low costs. It is not a good fit if your work depends on fast, uninterrupted uploads.
December against each city's best month
The question that matters for planning is whether December is a compromise or the real thing. For most of this list it is the real thing.
| City | Dec score | Best month score | Best month | Gap | Weakest score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chiang Mai | 488 | 488 | Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb | 0 | 247 (Aug) |
| Bangkok | 470 | 470 | Dec, Jan | 0 | 326 (Jul) |
| Ho Chi Minh City | 470 | 470 | Dec | 0 | 280 (Sep) |
| Phnom Penh | 461 | 461 | Dec, Jan | 0 | 281 (Oct) |
| Siem Reap | 460 | 460 | Dec, Jan | 0 | 288 (Sep) |
| Pattaya | 457 | 457 | Dec | 0 | 355 (May, Jul) |
| Mumbai | 456 | 456 | Dec, Jan | 0 | 92 (Jul) |
| Hong Kong | 453 | 473 | Oct | 20 | 201 (Jun) |
| Hanoi | 452 | 472 | Nov | 20 | 241 (Jul) |
| Vientiane | 451 | 451 | Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb | 0 | 225 (Jul, Aug) |
Eight of the ten cities are at their best, or tied for it, in December. Only Hong Kong and Hanoi are below it, by 20 points each. Two cities, Ho Chi Minh City and Pattaya, reach their single highest score of the year in December and in no other month. That is the reason December is the busiest planning month for nomads heading to Asia, and it is also why booking early matters: the good months are shared by many people.
Cost and everyday prices compared
The nomad cost figure covers a typical month for a remote worker. The itemised prices below show where the difference comes from. Where a figure is not shown, we have left it out rather than estimate it.
| City | Nomad cost (USD/month) | 1-bed flat, centre (USD) | 60 Mbps home internet (USD) | Inexpensive meal (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok | 1,490 | 594.58 | 15.46 | 2.74 |
| Ho Chi Minh City | 1,050 | 493.77 | 11.48 | 2.04 |
| Phnom Penh | 1,169 | 546.76 | 35.25 | 3.85 |
| Siem Reap | 1,212 | 237.50 | 35.25 | 2.25 |
| Mumbai | 1,536 | 522.40 | 9.33 | 3.68 |
| Hong Kong | 2,870 | 2,294.53 | 22.84 | 7.70 |
| Hanoi | 1,078 | 329.82 | 9.66 | 2.04 |
| Vientiane | 989 | 509.69 | not shown | 3.00 |
We left out Chiang Mai and Pattaya here because their itemised price rows are incomplete in our records, and Vientiane's internet plan price looked out of line with the rest, so we do not quote it. Their nomad cost figures, $1,106 and $1,503, are still reliable for the ranking above. The table shows that Hong Kong costs nearly three times the price of the cheapest city, and that housing, not food, is what drives that gap. A meal costs between $2.04 and $3.85 in seven of the eight cities shown; the flat is where the budget moves.
What the month-by-month pattern tells you
December is one point on a longer curve, and the shape of that curve differs by city. The Thai and Cambodian cities rise from October or November, hold their top score through January, and fall away from March as the heat builds. Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Phnom Penh all reach their highest scores in the first months of the year; their lowest come in the wet months, July to October, depending on the city.
Vietnam is the exception worth noting. Ho Chi Minh City peaks in December and drops by 15 points in January, while Hanoi peaks a month earlier, in November, and sits at 390 in January because the cold sets in. If you plan to travel through Vietnam over the winter, the sensible order is the north in October and November and the south from December onward. Mumbai, by contrast, climbs back from its monsoon low, reaches 394 in October, 436 in November and 456 in December and January.
For a longer stay, the cities that hold their score longest are Chiang Mai and Vientiane, both of which sit at their top level for four months in a row. If you are choosing a base for the whole of the cool season, those are the safest picks. If you want only December, Ho Chi Minh City and Pattaya are the cities where it is clearly the best month.
Who should pick which city
If you want the highest overall score and a good price, choose Chiang Mai. If speed and scale matter more, choose Bangkok. If you want the lowest cost among the large, well-connected cities, choose Ho Chi Minh City at $1,050 a month. If you want a quiet base and can live with modest internet, Siem Reap and Vientiane are the cheapest ways to spend December in a comfortable climate. If safety and infrastructure outrank cost, Hong Kong has the highest safety index at 78.6, but you will pay for it. If you want an Indian city in its dry season, Mumbai in December is a fair option at $1,536 a month.
Verdict
For a remote worker choosing one Asian city for December 2026, Chiang Mai is the answer our data gives: a monthly score of 488, a nomad budget of $1,106, city internet of 238 Mbps and a December climate of 22.8 C on average. Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City tie for second at 470, and the choice between them comes down to whether you would rather have the faster connection at $1,490 or the lower bill at $1,050.
The more useful finding is the one in the comparison table. For eight of the ten cities, December is the best or joint-best month of the year, which means you are not settling for second best by travelling in the busiest season. The only exceptions are Hong Kong and Hanoi, both 20 points below an autumn peak, and both are cool enough in December that you should plan for it. Pick the city that fits your bandwidth and budget, book early, and treat the order of places two to ten as a short list rather than a strict ranking.
